A Hunter’s Paradise: Embarking on Memorable Safari Hunts in South Africa
Unlike Zimbabwe, where the season runs from November to March, the South African hunting season runs year-round. The ideal time to visit is from May through September when the weather is cool and drier, allowing hunters to stalk and move more freely in the brush.
Limpopo Province
The Limpopo province offers hunters an incredible opportunity to pursue a number of popular big game species, including the sought-after trophy Kudu and red lechwe antelope. This province also hosts a large population of blesbok, impala and warthog, making it a great destination for hunters looking to add some diversity to their trophy room.
Other species of interest include the black springbok, a’morph’ variant that is darker in color due to a genetic mutation and pursued in the same areas as its common cousin, and the mountain reedbuck, another highly desirable big game addition to any trophy room. Hunters planning a trip to South Africa should contact their PH to obtain a license, as well as to provide proof of ownership of their firearms (U.S. Customs Form 4457 is sufficient). Each hunter is allowed to bring a maximum of four firearms into South Africa, but no two may be the same caliber.
